Passed on to eternal life January 26, 2016 aged 89.
Born in Saint Louis, MO and raised in Lakewood, OH enlisted in the Merchant Marine in 1945 to serve his country during World War II. His tenure included assignments on the SS Cape Charles and MV Coastal Spartan in the Pacific.
Following his return to civilian life he graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Agricultural Engineering and married his college sweetheart Shirley Ann Logan in 1952.Following a brief stint with Rex Chain Belt in Milwaukee, he began his own manufacturer's rep agency in 1960 with a focus on power transmission systems for large OEMs.
His passion was model railroading and he was active with fellow hobbyists in the Milwaukee area for many years. He also supported Scouting and was presented with many service awards, including the Silver Beaver Award, the organization's most prestigious. Both of his sons and one of his grandsons achieved Eagle status.
Active in his church, he initially attended the First Congregational in Wauwatosa followed by Lake County Congregational Church in Hartland, WI.
The final two years of John's life were spent at the Shorehaven Health Care facility in Oconomowoc where he won the hearts of so many fellow residents and staff with his positive attitude and his vast trove of stories and jokes. Philippians 2:14-15.
Preceded in death by beloved wife Shirley, parents John and Belle Smallshaw he is survived by sons John and William Smallshaw and grandchildren Suzanne, John, Michael, Stephanie, Monica and Brian Smallshaw.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 11 AM in the Chapel at Shorehaven, 1305 W Wisconsin Ave, Oconomowoc. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of Services.
