Gwendolyn Ruth Laasch moved on to her heavenly home on July 4, 1915 at the age of 99 years.
She was born on November 1, 1915, in Rockford, Iowa, the first child of Clayton and Ruth (Benson) Smith. She began her 59 years of marriage when she married her high school sweetheart Willis John Laasch on February 12, 1935, in Grand Mound, Iowa.
Gwen devoted her life to being a supportive wife to Willis and a caring mother to sons Stan and Tom. She saw her occupation in life as that of housewife, a job she diligently fulfilled in the various places they lived: Grand Mound, Camanche, Calamus on the family farm, and Dewitt. Gwen was an excellent gardener and a superb cook. Always active at Immanuel Lutheran church where she was a charter member of Ladies’ Aid. She also liked to watch game shows because she liked “to see people win prizes and money.” Her “15 minutes of fame” came when she herself was a participant on several national radio game shows.
She wintered for many years in Apache Junction, AZ, where she and Willis enjoyed the activities of their retirement community and which they used as base for travel in the western states and Mexico. She has lived the last few years in Wisconsin near her son Stan.
Gwen is survived by sons Stanley (Carla) Laasch of Hartland, WI, and
Thomas (Carole) Laasch of Sylvania, OH; grandchildren Brian (Tracey) Laasch of Fountain Hills, AZ; Scott (Michelle) Laasch of Pewaukee, WI; Marc (Sue) Laasch of Oconomowoc, WI; Dr. Cassie (Kevin) Hand of Royal Oak, MI; and Jaime (Grant) Laasch/Wilson of Big Pine Key, FL; and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Willis Laasch, her sister Virginia Hawthorne, and her brother Robert Smith.
A Memorial Service including burial of cremains will be held at 11:00 AM on August 8, 2015 at Immanuel Lutheran Church 702 Smith Street, Grand Mound, Iowa followed by lunch and fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gwen’s name may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grand Mound.
