Winifred Jane Riggs of Hartland, Wisconsin passed away peacefully at home on January 30th, 2018, at the age of 97. She was born
on July 27, 1920 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Henry and Adele
(nee Gerhard) Dunkert.
After graduating from Riverside High School, Winifred earned a degree in Nursing from the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, followed by a degree in Public Health from Marquette University.
In 1943, she joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps and proudly served
at both Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago and Treasure Island Naval Station in San Francisco.
It was in San Francisco that she met and later married Navy Lieutenant Leslie Gordon Riggs, a native of Tennessee. After the
war, Winifred and Leslie moved back to Milwaukee and raised three children. She later returned to her nursing career at the nearby Lutheran Home for the Aging.
Above all, Winifred was a loving wife and mother, devoted to her family. She had many diverse talents, including exceptional skills as
a cook and baker. Whatever she set out to do, she did with enthusiasm and dedication.
She will be deeply missed by her children Deborah (Merle) Riggs, Laurel Kinziger and Philip (Lorna) Riggs; grandchildren David Kinziger, Debby Kinziger and Diana Riggs.
Winifred was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Ralph Dunkert; her husband, Leslie Riggs; relatives and friends.
Visitation and services were held on February 6th at the Evert-Luko Funeral Home in Hartland. An interment ceremony for both Winifred and Leslie with Military Funeral Honors was held on February 7th, 2018 at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
